Reader Reviews:
-This book is a favorite coffee table book. It is intelligently written and well designed from a pedagogical
point of view. There is an ancestry table for each breed and great pictures. It is so inexpensive, anyone
with an interest in horses should own this book. It will become a household favorite.

-I am a wrap around therapist for an autistic 13 year old boy who cannot speak. He loves horses. We
use this book everyday for our drills. This book has so many facts that are uncomplicated, but
informative. It has beautiful pictures in it. Sometimes we just look at the pictures of horses because they
are so beautiful. It covers almost every topic about horses. I have learned a lot about horses My client
has learned alot through this book.

-I liked this book because it had many breeds I had never heard of. Susan McBane grouped the breeds
into regions of the world so you can find where the horse come from. McBane also put the breeds of the
horses which were breed together to form the breed. McBane gave great information about the breed
and it's highlights. If you are looking for an interesting breed you have found your book.
The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Horse Breeds
In this superb expanded and updated volume, equestrian expert Elwyn Hartley Edwards traces the
evolution of the horse, covering every major breed of horse and pony as well as the contribution the
horse has made to civilization -- in the wild, at work, at war, and in sport and recreation. Chronicling the
history of the horse, The New Encyclopedia of the Horse encompasses the early domestication of the
horse. This expanded edition features new information on Western riding as well as classical riding
styles, and current international sporting events. There are also completely new chapters on horse
management, training, and equipment. Visual Breed Guide: There are more than 150 of the world's
major breeds of horse and pony photographed in specially commissioned full-figure portraits as well as
hundreds of action shots. The origin, history, and uses of each breed are explained, and each breed is
brought to life by historical anecdotes and fascinating, little-known facts. Outstanding specimens of
familiar as well as obscure breeds are featured, including Dutch Warmbloods and Camargues,
Icelandic and Timor Ponies, Morgans and Shetlands, Andalucian and Lusitano, and the Cutting Horse.
Brand New Chapters: The new sections on horse management, training, and equipment explain the
basics of the proper care of the horse. Information is also included on farriers, feeding, grooming, horse
behavior, training techniques, and which equipment to use, including saddles, bridles, and bits. Truly
encyclopedic in scope, this is the essential reference for every horse lover.
The New Encyclopedia of The Horse
Horse enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels are fascinated by the history, characteristics, and abilities
of various breeds. Unfortunately, most current breed books are written for European readers and feature
horses that are rare or nonexistent in North America. A truly complete book on all the special horses of
North America has never been available—until now. Here is the most comprehensive guide, featuring in-
depth profiles and photographs, to 96 breeds that call North America home.

Readers will find homegrown favorites, such as the Morgan, Appaloosa, and Quarter Horse, along with
the less-known Nakota, McCurdy Plantation, and Florida Cracker horses. They’ll also meet the imported
breeds that have influenced native bloodlines and become part of the fabric of our history, such as the
Thoroughbred, Arabian, and Percheron, as well as more exotic introductions such as the Mangalarga
Marchador and the Selle Français. Covering color breeds, light horses, heavy horses, ponies, donkeys,
and mules, author Judith Dutson offers fascinating insight into the purpose each was bred for and
where it is now found in North America.

More than seven million horses inhabit North America today, with purposes ranging from racing to
pleasure, farm and ranch work, shows, search and rescue, and police work. Every region has its breed
(s) and every breed has its story — and its fans. This book speaks to all of them, and presents the
incredible history of the horse in North America, breed by breed.

About the Author
Author Judith Dutson owns and operates Horsefeather Farm, a recuperative care facility for horses
recovering from surgery or illness, located in Plain City, Ohio. Judith is also a part-time research
assistant at the Veterinary Clinical Sciences Department at the Ohio State University.

The Ultimate Horse Book should be subtitled "the ultimate horse photography book." A brilliantly
conceived and executed work, this book has captured in color photos what other horse books have
previously illustrated in drawings or descriptive text. What an amazing difference the color photo of a
horse's hoof makes in comparisn to the usual line drawing of the various parts of the hoof. In presenting
the different breeds, double - page color shots are used and include insets of photos of the same horse
to illustrate various parts of the confirmation. What an improvement and how long overdue! Although this
book uses the same basic format and informational layout as The Complete Horse Book ( LJ 10/15/91),
edited by Elwyn Edwards and Candida Geddes, its illustrations alone are worth the purchase.
Recommended for all equine collections. This will be a classic.

Reader Review
The Royal Horse of Europe is a stunning book dealing with the horse breeds derived from the Iberian
Peninsula (i.e. Spain & Portugal). It covers the history of these breeds, including their connection to the
Great Warhorse of the Medieval Period. In addition, it presents information on Iberian horse sports, such
as the corrida (the mounted bullfight) and the Iberian Schools of Classical Horsemanship. The writing
style is accessible, yet does not sacrifice sound scholarship. 50 color photos and 75 black & whites
illustrate the text. Note: This excellent book is extremely biased toward Iberian horse breeds. Eulogies
are occasionally inserted where I would have preferred logical arguments. This is a minor gripe,
however, for a book of such excellent quality. It is worth many rereads
The Royal Horses of Europe
From Booklist
This is the English-language edition of a fact-filled guide to the world of horses, originally published in
The Netherlands. There are two main sections: one covering breeds of horses and the other dealing
with the care of the horse and equestrian activities. Fifty breeds of horses and ponies are described in
terms of their origins and physical characteristics. A color photograph accompanies the description of
each breed. The section on breeds is followed by "Caring for Horses and Equestrian Sports," which
includes an explanation of confirmation points, charts illustrating colors, leg and facial markings, and
habits and characteristics of specific breeds. There are definitions of equestrian terms as well as
sections on equipment, feeding, grooming, hoof care, equine diseases and disorders, and stable
requirements. Training and riding basics, dressage terminology and exercises, show jumping, and
driving are covered.
Although the focus of the book is European, there is a chapter on Western riding; and North American
breeds are included. An appendix lists foundation sires and other well-know sires, and there is an
alphabetical index.

The encyclopedia does a good job of covering the broad spectrum of information of interest to horse
lovers. Although The Horse Encyclopedia is not as lavishly illustrated as Dorling Kindersley's
Encyclopedia of the Horse [RBB D 1 94], almost all of the short but informative descriptions and
explanations are accompanied by photographs, and young readers especially will find the format
appealing. Both International Encyclopedia of Horse Breeds and International Encyclopedia of Horses
and Ponies [both RBB N 1 95] cover more breeds, while The Horse Dictionary [RBB N 1 95] covers more
related terms. The Horse Encyclopedia is recommended for school and public libraries needing
another resource on the topic.
The Horse Encyclopedia
From Library Journal
This volume claims to be the most complete compilation of horse breeds ever attempted, including
nearly 400 breeds from all over the world. Hendricks has bred and raised several types of horses and
has spent over 30 years studying horse breeds. Abandoning the practice of other horse encyclopedias,
which attempt to group breeds by function, she simply lists them in alphabetical order. Each breed entry
includes information about breed origin and background, size, appearance, chief use, and status (rare
vs. common). Most entries include photographs and are of varying length, running from a few
paragraphs to several pages. Hendricks obtained this information from breed authorities and
organizations, and the appendix includes a complete list of breed associations with addresses. This
book should not be compared to Elwyn Hartley Edwards's Encyclopedia of the Horse (LJ 11/15/94) as
the latter emphasizes horse evolution and covers far fewer breeds (150). This authoritative effort is
highly recommended as an essential purchase for all equine collections and medium to large reference
collections.?Deborah Emerson, Monroe Community Coll. Lib., Rochester, N.Y.
