Dogny: America's Tribute to Search and Rescue Dogs
Reader's Review
This book is a beautiful, thought provoking tribute to the wonderful service provided by the trained search
and rescue operations carried out by these dogs, with particular emphasis on 9/11.Over 100 life sized
German Shepherd forms were distributed to artists to paint in any fashion they wished to celebrate
these animals. The results were exceptional. Each piece of art was given a name ,displayed and later
auctioned off with the proceeds used for the future benefit of these dogs. Each piece of art is explained
by the artist and there is also a short note about the artist. Overall this is a well put together coffee table
sized book and should be appreciated by everyone.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School—This oversize pictorial work profiles various canines; color photos on every page
show them at work. Comments from the owners describe the dogs and what they did. Many individuals
mention how hard it was for the animals not to find survivors, but what a comfort their presence was for
the many firefighters and other rescue workers on the scene. Besides searching at the World Trade
Center and at the Pentagon, dogs were used to locate remains at the Fresh Kills Landfill site. The book
also has information about dog search and rescue and FEMA certification. A compelling browsing item
that will attract teens.—Teri Titus, San Mateo County Library, CA

Search and rescue dogs are invaluable members of certified rescue teams designated to locate
accident victims and lost adults and children in wilderness areas and at disaster scenes. This book
presents advice and guidance for rescue dog handlers, with information on how dogs scent, and
detailed instruction on training of both dogs and their handlers. The author discusses rescue
specialties where dogs are a critical resource in specific circumstances that include avalanche rescue,
locating drowning victims, and locating both the living and the dead in the wake of plane crashes,
earthquakes, and other calamities. The text is supplemented with color photos and helpful line art.
All America is thrilled by Search and Rescue missions, especially when the well-trained dogs are
brought in to save victims of earthquakes, hurricanes and man-made disasters. We watch with
fascination and horror as these tales unfold across our TV sets. This is one of the few comprehensive
books on the training of SAR dogs. It is a complete approach to training for this type of dog.
Drs. Resi Gerritsen and Ruud Haak have developed an exceptional method of training search and
rescue dogs, which they have successfully used for all types of search operations: Wilderness
Searches, Disaster Searches, and Avalanche Searches. This book covers their entire training method
from basic training through the specific methods required for each type of search operation. Also
included are tips on search preparation, safety in search operations, disaster operations coordination,
information on the scent capabilities of dogs, and a brief history of canine search and rescue. The book
winds up with International Test requirements from the IPOR and a bibliography for further research.

From Library Journal
This is a truly remarkable account of an uncommon woman, her extraordinary German shepherd dogs,
and their combined talent and devotion. Hebard, a pioneer in the area of canine search-and-rescue
work, recounts with co-author Whittemore over 25 years of her life spent training her dogs, herself, and
others to assist in the location of lost persons, criminals, and disaster victims. A woman of conviction
and purpose, Hebard was able to rise to head of the U.S. Disaster Team Canine Unit and still raise a
family. Hebard describes her motivation, how she acquired her dogs, and how she trained them and
provides gripping, sometimes graphic, accounts of rescues she participated in. (She located cadavers
as well as live persons.) Readers will feel the terror of the 1985 Mexico City earthquake and the horror of
the Oklahoma City bombing. They will grieve with Hebard and her family as her canine partners age and
pass on. Readers will also be impressed by Hebard's depth of understanding of canine psychology and
positive motivational training techniques. Highly recommended.?Edell Marie Schaefer, Brookfield P.L.,
